For the implementation of autonomously driving vehicles in public roads, the environment detection is of particular importance. These include besides the camera-based systems such as the rear view camera distance sensor-based systems too. The most well-known representative of these systems, which have been established for years, is the parking aid. Additional self-parking systems require additional sensors to observe the lateral area next to the vehicle. During driving, these sensors can be used to detect vehicles in the so-called "blind spot" of the rearview mirror, which is absolutely necessary for an intended lane change. This "blind spot assistant" shows the driver vehicles in the blind spot and warns as soon as he wants to change lanes from the possible danger.
The "Side Assist" training system from LEYBOLD® includes both a reversing camera and a blind spot warning system. Didactic based experiments according to the curriculum for automotive mechatronics engineers can be carried out practically in the classroom. The instructor may apply a variety of errors to the system, which must be found by an appropriate search strategy based on the self-diagnostic functions.
