Determination of Planck’s constant

LP9.2.6.1C
Determination of Planck’s constant
Determination of Planck’s constant

Description

In this experiment, students use LEDs of different colours to determine an approximate value for Planck’s constant h. To do this, they measure the threshold voltage at which each LED begins to glow and, using the corresponding wavelength λ or frequency ν, calculate the value for h in each case and then take the average. In doing so, they explore fundamental concepts of quantum physics, in particular the relationship between photon energy EPh and frequency ν according to E = h ⋅ ν.
