Description

The law of constant mass ratios is illustrated in this experiment using copper(II) sulphate-5-hydrate. The copper sulphate is heated in a test tube, releasing the water of crystallisation. The students can recognise this by the colour change of the crystals from blue to white and the drops of liquid separating on the test tube wall. The mass ratio is then calculated from the masses determined. The students realise that the mass ratio of water to copper is always the same despite different initial quantities.
