Water splitting and water synthesis

LC1.2.2.1
Water splitting and water synthesis
Water splitting and water synthesis

Description

In this experiment the terms analysis and synthesis are illustrated and carried out. Water steam is passed over zinc powder. The oxygen from the water reacts with zinc to form zinc oxide. What remains is hydrogen, which the students can detect with the oxyhydrogen gas sample. The students recognise that water consists of hydrogen and oxygen (analysis). Since hydrogen burns to form water, it also becomes clear that water is formed when hydrogen is burnt with oxygen (synthesis).
