Detection of multivalent alkanols

LC2.3.2.3
Detection of multivalent alkanols
Detection of multivalent alkanols

Description

In this experiment, multivalent alkanols are detected. This is done by adding copper sulphate solution to various alkanols and bringing them into an alkaline environment with the help of sodium hydroxide solution. Multivalent alkanols react in a dark blue to green colour (complex formation), monovalent ones do not react. The students learn about and apply a proof for multivalent alkanols.
