Description

Copper has the second highest electrical conductivity of all elements and that is why it is of immense importance for electrical engineering. To extract copper, chalcopyrite is reduced in smelting furnaces and then purified by electrolytic refining. During this process, the raw copper metal is oxidised as an anode and re-deposited on a copper cathode by using electrolysis. The copper that is obtained in this way has a purity of 99.99 %. In this experiment, the students will produce high-purity copper themselves by electrolytic refining.
