Description

Copper sulphate and zinc react to form copper and zinc ions in a reaction that releases a lot of energy. The students can measure this energy in this experiment with their calorimeter as a temperature increase. The same reaction is used in electrochemistry in the Daniell element to produce electrical energy. The students recognise that the energy stored in a reaction can be converted into different forms depending on the experimental setup. They calculate the molar enthalpy of reaction of the reaction and can compare the value with other enthalpies of reaction.
