Steam distillation for the extraction of fragrances

LC2.6.1.2
Steam distillation for the extraction of fragrances
Steam distillation for the extraction of fragrances

Description

The distillation is an important separation process in organic chemistry. However, normal distillations are unsuitable for sensitive substances, as these decompose at higher temperatures. For such special cases, very gentle distillations such as hydrodistillation or steam distillation are suitable. In this experiment, the students are to carry out a hydrodistillation themselves to extract essential oils from lemons.
