Description

The falling-ball viscometer is used for the precise measurement of the viscosity of transparent Newtonian liquids and gases. It meets the requirements specified in DIN 53015 and is approved by the PTB (Physikalisch-Technische Bundesanstalt) for official calibration.

Measuring principle
Rolling and sliding movement of a ball in an inclined cylindrical tube filled with the liquid to be tested. The time the ball needs to travel a defined measuring distance is measured. By swivelling the metal part, the return travel of the ball can also be used for the measurement. The measured result is given as dynamic viscosity in the internationally standardised absolute unit millipascal second [mPa s].

Temperature control
As viscosity is highly temperature-dependent, precise temperature control of the sample is provided. This is done, for example, with a recirculating thermostat. The temperature is monitored using a thermometer built into the viscometer (standard -1 ... +26 °C, graduated in 0.1 K).

Typical application examples
The falling-ball viscometer is used predominantly for low-viscosity substances, e.g.:

  • Oils, liquid hydrocarbons (petroleum industry)
  • Solvents, solutions of plastics and resins, inks (chemical industry)
  • Glycerine, raw materials (pharmaceutical industry)
  • Gelatine, sugar solutions (food industry).

Technical data

  • Viscosity range: 0.5 ... 105 mPa s (cP)
  • Temperature range: -20 ... +120 °C
  • Repeatability: better than 0.5 %
  • Comparability: better than 1 %
  • Material:
balls 1 and 2 made of borosilicate glass
    balls 3 and 4 made of nickel-iron
    balls 5 and 6 made of nickel-iron
