In this experiment, the students build a model of a saccharimeter and gain an understanding of how it works. In the process, investigations are carried out on two different sugars, one clockwise and the other counter-clockwise.
In addition, the dependence of the angle of rotation on the path length of the light through the solution, as well as on the applied concentration, is also investigated. This experiment also offers an interdisciplinary approach to topics such as dextrorotatory and levorotatory bacteria, chirality and the significance of these in nature.
