The corrosion of iron

LC3.1.4.1
The corrosion of iron
The corrosion of iron

Description

In this experiment the students explore the corrosion of iron. To accelerate this process, the students connect an iron electrode to a copper electrode in an electrically conductive manner. The reaction products of the corrosion, hydroxide ions and iron ions, are made visible by 2 indicators (phenolphthalein, potassium ferricyanide). Through this the students discover that iron goes into solution during iron corrosion and that corrosion is accelerated by contact with more noble metals.
